Prosecutor: Milford cops didn’t resubmit warrant application
Official: More details were needed in case against man now accused of fatal attack
MILFORD — A prosecutor said Friday that an arrest warrant application from police last month for the suspect in a domestic homicide this week was returned to cops with a request for more information and “not resubmitted.”
Julie Minogue was killed Tuesday night inside her Salem Walk condo while two of her children, 17 and 3, were present. Police have charged the 3-year-old’s father with murder, saying he stormed into the home wielding an ax around 9 p.m. before brutally killing Minogue.
Court documents revealed Minogue complained to police last month about 220 harassing text messages she had been sent by the suspect, Ewen Dewitt, who was already facing felony charges in connection with an alleged 2019 assault of Minogue.
On Thursday, Marilisa Anania, the police department’s public information officer, said in a prepared statement that they had sought an arrest warrant for Dewitt in connection with the text messages on Nov. 19, but that “To date, the warrant has not been signed.”
The police did not elaborate as to why — and the top prosecutor in the judicial district, Margaret E. Kelley, declined to comment on the case late Thursday.
On Friday morning, a spokesperson for the state’s Division of Criminal Justice released a statement from Kelley offering sympathy to Minogue’s friends and family — and some context regarding the arrest warrant application.
“On behalf of the Ansonia/Milford State’s Attorney’s
Office, I would like to extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Julie Minogue,” the statement read. “The Ansonia/Milford State’s Attorney’s Office received an arrest warrant affidavit for Mr. Dewitt on Nov. 21, 2022. It was immediately reviewed by prosecutors and returned to Milford police on that same date, Nov. 21, 2022, with a request for additional information. It was not resubmitted.
“At this time, the State’s Attorney’s Office is working with the Milford Police Department regarding that warrant application,” Kelley’s statement concluded.
Milford police did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Hearst Connecticut Media about why the warrant application had not yet been resubmitted.
A spokesperson for the Division of Criminal Justice declined further comment, citing the pending case.
