UConn rises to No. 8 in latest AP poll
The UConn women’s basketball team rose one spot to No. 8 in the latest AP Top 25 Poll after the Huskies beat Seton Hall and DePaul last week.
UConn, which plays at Marquette Tuesday night, has appeared in the poll for 576 consecutive weeks.
South Carolina stood firm at No. 1 this week, followed by UCLA, Colorado, Kansas State and Iowa. The Hawkeyes dropped three spots after losing to Ohio State.
Fairfield (15-1) doubled its vote total from four to eight and was again among others receiving votes.
The Huskies (16-3) are on a 12-game winning streak with dominant Big East victories over Seton Hall and DePaul. Preseason All-American Paige Bueckers scored a season-high 32 points on four-of-eight shooting from three against the Pirates. Aaliyah Edwards totaled 17 points while Nika Muhl recorded 10 assists.
Against DePaul, freshman guard Ashlynn Shade led all scorers with 21 points, recorded seven rebounds and one steal. Bueckers totaled 20 points and Edwards contributed another 18.
The Huskies have two top-25 matchups this week. First UConn will travel to Tuesday, then host a long-standing rivalry game against No. 15 Notre Dame on Saturday. Marquette fell out of the Top 25 Poll.
Shade honored
Ashlynn Shade was named Big East Freshman of the Week for the fifth time this season. UConn has won the award 10 of 11 weeks this season.
Shade averaged 13.0 points, 4.5 rebounds and 2.0 steals in two wins. She had a gamehigh 21 points and personal-best seven rebounds against DePaul Saturday
Shade has started the past 12 games and is averaging 14.5 points per game in that span.
