Shishmaref man accused of sexual abuse of minor

- By Diana Haecker

On Monday, January 3, Dylan Iyatunguk of Shishmaref, 18, had a felony first appearance in the Nome court, stemming from a complaint of sexual abuse of a minor in the second degree. According to court documents, the investigation into this case came about as troopers investigated a different case when an “outcry witness” disclosed that an underage member of the Iyatunguk household was sexually assaulted.

The child was interviewed at the Child Advocacy Center in Nome in mid-December, and stated that in a period starting a few years ago and again a few months ago, Dylan Iyatunguk touched her private parts outside of her clothes. According to the trooper affidavit, she was afraid to tell anybody and didn’t feel safe in her home any longer. The child also felt worried about a younger sister living in the same home.

State law specifies that an offender commits the crime of sexual abuse of a minor in the second degree if, being 18 years or older, the offender engages in sexual contact with a person who is under 16-years of age and the victim at the time of the offense is residing in the same household as the offender.

During court proceedings, DA John Earthman added that the victim at the time of the assaults was 12 to 13-years-old.

Iyatunguk is in custody. The court agreed with the prosecutions recommendation and set bail at $ 5,000 cash, no contact with the victim, must stay 100 feet from the residence and can have no contact with children under 18 without an adult present. The next court appearance is scheduled for January 12.
