Subway Showdown to be held with COVID precautions in place
Nome-Beltz Middle and High School will host the Sunday Showdown Basketball Tournament, starting Thursday, January 6, and going through Saturday, January 8.
Due to COVID-19 mitigation measures, the gym can only be at 50 percent capacity. While proof of vaccination or a negative will not be requested, all spectators must wear masks, sit in household groups and maintain a six-foot distance from other groups. Organizers ask that anyone who feels ill not attend.
On Thursday at 2 p.m., Kotzebue girls will play the Unalakleet girls, followed by the boys playing at 3:30 p.m.. Nome girls will play Sitka at 6:30 p.m., followed by the boys 8:00 p.m. The evening games have been moved to a slightly later time to allow the Sitka team to arrive in Nome.
Unalakleet boys will play Sitka boys at 2 p.m. on Friday, followed by the girls at 3:30 p.m.. In the evening, Nome will take on Kotzebue: the boys play at 6:00 p.m., the girls at 7:30 p.m.
Saturday morning will have a special Skills Competition at 11:00 a.m. for the Nanooks and others to strut their stuff before the final matches of the tournament. Sitka plays Kotzebue girls at 1:00 p.m., boys at 2:30 p.m. Finally, Nome plays Unalakleet. The girls tip-off at 5:00 p.m. and the boys at 6:30 p.m..
All of the early session games – the games Nome is not playing in – are open entry. Passes will not be checked, but if capacity gets to 50 percent, entry will be closed.
For the late session games, which Nome-Beltz will play in, fans must have a pass in order to attend. Spectators can get passes from varsity basketball players, cheerleaders and coaches.
