- By Sara Bioff

Senior Night for the Lady Nanooks basketball team, the cheer team and pep band was meant to begin on Friday, March 4, however, due to a snowstorm, it got pushed back to Saturday, March 5.

While the girls’team played home games, the boys traveled to Unalakleet. The JV team played first against the City League team, The Janets, and scored 39 and City League 55.

The Varsity team played the Lady Wolfpack from Unalakleet, scoring a victory of 53 to the Wolfpack’s 43 points on Senior Night. Sunday, March 6, the girl’s varsity played one last home game for fun against the Wolfpack and scored 63, and Wolfpack scored 22.

The following seniors were celebrated on Senior Night: Della Medlin (Basketball), Paris Hebel (Cheer), Raina McRae (Cheer), Karis Evans (Cheer), Thomas Dempsey (Pep Band), Clara Hansen (Pep Band) and Parker Kenick (Pep Band).

The night began with the music teacher Brandon Smith thanking the pep band seniors for their hard work and bringing them to the gym floor to be recognized by the crowd.

The night then moved to the three cheer seniors reading their speeches and giving thanks for their years in cheer.

Lastly, senior Della Medlin shared her memories on the basketball team and gave sweet acknowledgements to everyone who helped her along the way. When asked what her favorite memory on senior night was, Medlin said, “Probably my speech and the impact it had on other people, like I didn’t cry, but it definitely got to a lot of people. I am just really happy people understand how grateful I am for them and how I have such a great support system.”

It was also the last home game for the cheer coach Rebekah Albertson, who will be leaving Nome-Beltz by the end of the school year. During the celebration, Albertson was given gifts as a Thank You for her service as a cheer coach. One of the gifts included a specialized cheer performed by McRae and Evans. When asked what McRae would miss most about Coach Albertson she said, “Albertson is like the best, so I am going to miss how blunt she is and how she is not afraid to tell someone when they need to do something better.”

There will be no more home games for the Nanooks. The Western Conference Tournament will be held on Thursday, March 10-12, 2022. Both Nanook varsity teams will be going, as well as the Nanook cheer team.
