really good recipe.”

As a single mother of four with three very hungry boys, Bonnie had to stretch resources and these cookies were quick, easy and filling. They’re made of pantry staples and were typically served in a repurposed Cool Whip container.

Bonnie was a baker. Crafting cheesecake, German chocolate cake, pies and all kinds of goodies, especially during Christmas. Yet her simple, no-bake cookies recipe etched into an obelisk head stone along with a jet symbolizing her years as a flight attendant, a poem by her granddaughter, a picture of an iris, her favorite flower, and an Eastern Star because of her participation in the organization of the same name.

“They were her signature cookie, one of those things that kids could make, adults could make, a family thing,” Doug said.

Not only were the cookies a part of the family, they’re also famous to Nome. When the Nugget asked permission to publish the recipe Doug laughed and said almost half the town has some version of the recipe by now.

One secret that’s not on the headstone is to add an extra heaping scoop of peanut butter, it has to be Jif, Robin said.

As the winter starts, treat yourself to Bonnie’s no-bake cookies, and don’t skimp on the peanut butter.
