BSNC appoints Cindy Massie as President
Bering Straits Native Corporation announced on Monday that Cindy Towarak Massie is now president of the company.
Dan Graham, who had been serving as interim president and CEO over the last six months, will remain as BSNC’s CEO.
“In consideration of BSNC’s growth over the years, the Board of Directors made the decision to split the President & CEO position,” BSNC Board Chair Roy Ashenfelter said in the company’s announcement. “This structure provides significant oversight of company management to better prepare for growth while simultaneously focusing on BSNC’s mission to improve the quality of life of Our People. We are pleased to fill these positions with two extremely qualified and dedicated individuals.”
BSNC reorganized leadership after Gail Schubert suddenly stepped down as CEO and president in May. Schubert had been CEO since 2009 and the president since 2010.
Board member Cindy Massie, who grew up in Unalakleet, was appointed to serve as board chair between May and the annual shareholder meeting in October, when Roy Ashenfelter was appointed to chair the board.
Massie will stay on the BSNC board.
Massie co-founded The Outdoor Channel nearly 30 years ago, and according to BSNC’s announcement, she is also a former owner of the production company Winnercom Inc., and Skycam.
“I am honored to assume the role of President of BSNC,” Massie said in a statement. “Our Alaska Native values are integral to the Company and our community, and I am committed to preserving our cultural heritage while creating opportunities for economic growth at BSNC. I’d like to thank our shareholders for your ongoing support.”
She also thanked Graham and said his leadership was “vital to BSNC’s business continuity” during this period of transition.
