- By Anna Lionas

Nanooks represented Nome well last weekend at the Kotzebue Husky Shootout, as the boys Varsity team won the tournament and the Lady Nanooks took second place.

“Kotzebue was a big win for us, on their home court,” Coach Patrick Callahan told the Nugget.

The accolades don’t stop there. Finn Gregg, Richard Cross, Cohen Booth, Benny Lie and Alora Stasenko were named to the all-tournament team. Finn Gregg and Cohen Booth won the boys team shooting competition. Claire Fagerstrom won the girls free throw contest and Alora Stasenko won the girls three-point contest.

Finn Gregg also achieved an impressive personal milestone scoring his 1,000th career point during the game against Hutchison High School.

The boys Varsity team currently has a season record of 12-3.

The Lady Nanooks also had an impressive weekend, defeating Delta and Hutchison before facing off against the Huskies. Callahan said it was a good start for the Lady Nanooks, and they ended the first half with a lead. In the third half the Huskies pulled ahead after earning 13 points in a row. The last minutes of the game were exciting with a few opportunities for threes to tie up the game, but they were missed and the Huskies beat out the Lady Nanooks 47-44.

This upcoming weekend Nome will host their largest tournament of the year with seven teams coming to Nome to play in the Norton Sound Shootout. The tournament is for 1A schools and Nome’s JV teams will play Thursday through Saturday in a bracket with Brevig Mission, Gambell, Newhalen, Point Lay, Savoonga, Shishmaref and White Mountain.
