A drunken driver told officers he fled from the scene of an accident because he was scared, according to police.

Police responded to reports of a car crash on Seeley Road around 10 p.m. Saturday. At the scene, police said they found a car abandoned and crashed into a stone wall.

Robert Polo, 54, of Cherry Lane, Wilton, was found walking nearby on Cannon Road. Polo, who police said smelled heavily of alcohol, confirmed he had been the driver of the car.

Police said Polo displayed bloodshot eyes and slurred speech during the exchange, so he was administered a sobriety test, which he failed, and was arrested. He later refused to submit to a breath test.

Polo was charged with driving under the influence, evading responsibility, distracted driving and failure to keep right on a curve. He was released on $260 bond, and he was given a court date of Sept. 18.
