RAISING FUNDS FOR MATERNAL MENTAL HEALTH
On Oct. 13, the Connecticut chapter of Postpartum Support International will be co-sponsoring a 5k run, one-mile walk, and kids fun run for maternal mental health in memory of a local young mother of two who succumbed to postpartum depression in October 2016.
The event is co-sponsored by Light for Kara, an organization established in the memory of Kara Kovlakas, and PSI-CT. “Light for Kara 5K for Maternal Mental Health” was conceived as a way to increase awareness of postpartum issues while raising money for PSICT’s mission.
Check-in begins at 7:30 a.m.; the walk/run begins at 9 a.m. at Calf Pasture Beach in Norwalk. Registration is open now.
Paid participants who register by Sept. 29 will receive a commemorative shirt and give-away items. Participants will be treated to snacks and fluids after the finish.
Sponsorship opportunities range from $200 for a logo on the race t-shirt to start and finish line bundles for $1,500.
Funds generated by sponsors and race registration beyond covering costs of the race will be used to fulfill PSI-CT’s mission of increasing resources to moms and families in Connecticut. The proceeds will enable PSI-CT to increase awareness of perinatal mood and anxiety disorders and to provide training and support to providers around the state who are addressing the unique needs of new mothers and their families in diverse communities.
A portion of the proceeds will also be donated to Malta House in Norwalk, an organization that provides a nurturing home environment, support services, and guidance to help pregnant and parenting mothers learn independent living skills.
