Softball scuffle leads to gun threats

- By Pat Tomlinson

NORWALK — A Stamford man landed in police custody after threatening to shoot an opposing player in the head during a blowout softball loss, police said.

The softball game was being played at Calf Pasture Beach around 10 p.m. Friday when the shortstop on the losing team began acting out, police said. The shortstop, Elvin Caban, 28, of Bedford Street, Stamford, was yelling at teammates when a player on the other team who was up at bat reportedly told him, “You stink.”

Caban attempted to rush the batter, police said, but was held back by teammates. Police spokesman Lt. Paul Resnick said it was then that the 28-year-old threatened to shoot the man “in the head with hollow point bullets.”

As a result, Caban was ejected from the game. When he refused to leave, the game was called off and the police were called. With police on the way, Caban continued to yell racial epithets and threaten the opposing team, saying he didn’t care because he has been arrested before, Resnick said.

Caban fled the area as police cruisers were seen approaching, police said.

Based on the threats, detectives were granted arrest and search warrants for Caban’s Stamford residence, and on Saturday those warrants were executed. Police said Caban was taken into custody without incident. A search of his apartment failed to find any weapons or ammunition, police said.

Caban was charged with first-degree threatening and breach of peace. He was held on $20,000 bond and given a court date of Oct. 29.
