Dangerfield on watch list for Lieberman Award
The preseason accolades continue for UConn's Crystal Dangerfield.
On Monday, Dangerfield was named to the watch list for the Nancy Lieberman Award, which is given annually to the nation's top point guard.
Dangerfield was a key contributor on the Huskies’ Final Four team as a sophomore, averaging 9.5 points and 2.1 rebounds per game. She finished second on the team with 142 assists and was a third-team All-American Athletic Conference pick.
Last week, Dangerfield, a 5-foot-5 junior, was named to the preseason All-AAC Team along with UConn’s two other returning starters, forwards Katie Lou Samuelson — the conference’s Preseason Player of the Year — and Napheesa Collier.
Four Huskies have previously won the Lieberman Award, including Sue Bird (2000, 2001), Diana Taurasi (2003, 2004), Renee Montgomery (2009) and Moriah Jefferson (2015, 2016). Oregon’s Sabrina Ionescu won the award last season.
In addition to Dangerfield, 19 other players were named to the watch list by the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame and Women’s Basketball Coaches Association on Monday. The Huskies will play four of them this season: DePaul’s Kelly Campbell; Notre Dame’s Marina Mabrey; Ohio State’s Carmen Grande; South Carolina’s Tyasha Harris.
This year’s winner will be announced in April at the Final Four in Tampa, Fla.
