STAMFORD — The scope of their investigation has narrowed, but police say vast challenges remain in tracing the origin of a dead baby found last week at a city garbage and recycling center.

Police say the baby was likely left in a dumpster at a commercial property in Stamford, Norwalk, Westport, Ridgefield, Danbury or in Westchester County, but are hoping for a break in the case to pinpoint the exact location.

”There are still a lot of challenges ahead with a number of communities to look into, and there is still tremendous difficulty involved,” Lt. Thomas Scanlon said. “We need a break and someone with information to come forward.”

City Carting employees discovered the newborn baby boy when a conveyor belt malfunctioned at the Taylor Reed Place facility on Oct. 16.

Police said the child “can only be described as a white or Hispanic male.” It is still unknown if the baby was stillborn or died after birth, police said.

Scanlon said investigators have interviewed City Carting employees, examined video footage of materials being dumped and reviewed logs of where the trucks had been that morning.

Police initially investigated whether the materials came from as far as Oyster Bay, N.Y., and Andover Mass., but Scanlon said investigators have ruled out those locations.

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner conducted an autopsy, but the preliminary findings were inconclusive in determining the cause and manner of the baby’s death.

Several forensic tests are still in progress.
