A wooded Rowayton retreat

Shingle-style colonial built in 2007 perfect for entertaining

- By Gretchen A. Peck

Built in 2007, the shingle-style colonial at 28 Briar St. in Rowayton is listed for sale with Julie Peters of Houlihan Lawrence’s Darien office. The property — described by the listing Realtor as “like a retreat” — is listed for $1.799 million.

Among the 4,982 square feet of living space are formal living and dining rooms, a home office, a family room with a wood-burning fireplace and the custom-designed kitchen gourmets will adore.

The kitchen has been crafted around cabinets by Alrich Cabinetry with Brazilian Verde Karzai granite on the countertops, the seller explained. Some of the upper cabinets have glass fronts. The appliances are high-end models from Thermador with a dishwasher by Fisher & Paykel nestled in the center island. There’s a sunny breakfast area, for informal day-today dining, just steps from the island. Plus, the island itself offers seating for three.

The well-equipped kitchen, combined with generous interior rooms and the utility of outdoor living space ensured that the homeowners were able to entertain with ease

here, including hosting large parties, according to the seller.

“The house has an open floor plan that is great for entertaining, and the outdoor deck and patio — with the outdoor fireplace — extend both family and entertainment space,” the seller noted.

The terrace and outdoor fireplace is located just off the kitchen; it overlooks a private garden. The deck the seller described is made of teak and it overlooks a pool.

The home has a total of five bedrooms, including the second level master suite, which has another of the house’s fireplaces. Three additional bedrooms are located on this

level, as well.

The fifth bedroom is located one more level up, where there’s also a full bath, a bonus room and lots of storage space.

The seller acquired the property in 2007 when the home was new. During their time here, they’ve made important improvements. They finished off the third floor of the home, and installed an inground free-form pool and spa. The home’s lower level walks out to the pool area through two sets of double doors off the recreation room on that level. A walk-in wine room is also poised for special occasions.

“The wooded site makes the rear yard wonderfully peaceful — natural and private,” the seller described the 0.48-acre setting.

To help with auto and home management, the house has an attached three-car garage with a workbench area. There’s also an exterior tool shed in place.

The property is located within walking distance to the train station, making it particularly appealing to buyers interested in frequent visits or commutes to Manhattan.

“Rowayton is the sixth taxing district in Norwalk,” Peters said. “They have access to Bayley Beach, with wonderful frontage to Long Island Sound, a playground, tennis courts and special summer Sundayevening concerts. On any given day you’ll find residents, biking, paddle boarding, walking their dogs or just hanging out for a cup of coffee with friends. It’s an active community, where people take a real interest in each other, and neighbors treat each other like family.”

An open house is scheduled from 2 to 4 p.m. on Oct. 28.
