Wal­ter J. Arndt, Jr., 85, passed away peace­fully at home sur­rounded by fam­ily on Nov. 8. Wal­ter was pre­de­ceased by his lov­ing wife, Francine E. Me­lan­son Arndt and his son Paul Arndt.

He served in the US Navy from 1952-1957. He joined the Nor­walk Po­lice Dept. in March of 1957 and was pro­moted to Sergeant. He at­tained the rank of Lieu­tenant and was 2nd in com­mand of the de­tec­tive bureau, pro­moted to Cap­tain and then re­tired as In­spec­tor. Arndt was also re­spon­si­ble for im­ple­ment­ing the depart­ment’s com­puter sys­tem, which greatly im­proved the depart­ment’s man­age­ment re­ports. He was also a co-founder of the Po­lice As­soc. of CT. Arndt earned his Mas­ters in Crim­i­nal Jus­tice from the Univ. of New Haven and grad­u­ated cum laude with a Bach­e­lor’s in B.A. Dur­ing this time, he also served as pro­fes­sor and co­or­di­na­tor of the Crim­i­nal Jus­tice Pro­gram at NCC. Wal­ter is sur­vived by son, Alan Arndt (Jan­ice), daugh­ter, An­drea Fe­dor (Allen), sis­ter, Lori Tay­lor (Tony), daugh­ter-in-law Sharon Es­pos­ito, sev­eral grand­chil­dren, a great grand­daugh­ter and sev­eral nieces and neph­ews. He was also pre­de­ceased by sev­eral sis­ters and a brother.

His fam­ily will re­ceive friends on Wed, Nov 14 from 5-7 p.m. at the Mag­ner Fu­neral Home, 12 Mott Ave., Nor­walk. A Fu­neral Mass will be held on Thurs­day, Nov 15, 11 a.m. at St. Jerome Church, 23 Half Mile Rd., Nor­walk. Burial with mil­i­tary honors will fol­low at St. John Ceme­tery, Nor­walk.
