CAST A SPELL ON YOUR HOME

- Eileen Fischer is a freelance writer and former editor of Sunday Arts and Style.

“to cast a spell to help her find a new house,” her two special interests, decorating and practicing magic, suddenly came together. She hit upon the idea of creating housespell kits for clients “to bring good energy into their homes,” she writes.

In 2015 this concept expanded into her shop HausWitch, which continued her original idea of “people making over their homes for not a lot of money.” The spell kits come in a houseshaped cardboard box and include all the elements needed for a spell and instructions on how to cast a spell. The North Wind spell kit, for example, is to protect your home from negative energy, according to her website. Other kits include Dream Haus, to help you find the perfect home sweet home, and Co Habitate, which promotes a harmonious household. Online and at the store, HausWitch also offers “magical” cleaning products, crystals, candles, pillows and wall art made by local artisans.

“We make the spell kits and allnatural vegan organic cleaning products,” Feldmann says. “Largely women, queer folk and craftsmen make the objects we sell. The items are imbued with different vibrations that large companies can’t do. A handcrafted coffee mug carries a different vibration than something (mass produced). An artist is imbuing their piece with their passion and gratitude into what they make; it is going to feel a lot different than something made in a factory … when you bring something handmade into your home with loving vibrations, you will feel the comfort.”

How does Feldmann define magic? “Our culture defines it as other, something that isn’t considered provable fact,” she says. “To me it’s not magic, but makes sense. It works together the way scientific processes work together. For example, crystals have a vibration, we know that. Different elements have different properties. You’re really working with those properties and calling them to aid you.”

Each chapter of “HausMagick” focuses on one of Feldmann’s six principles on achieving a comfortable dwelling — manifesting, clearing, protection, comfort, harmony and balance — and should be followed in that order. Manifesting is the first step.

“Getting clear on what you want is first and forefront,” Feldmann says. “Do you want your home to be a relaxing retreat or do you want a creative space or (feel like) you’re out in nature?”

Understanding how you can bring in the elements that will support you to be “your highest and best self ” doesn’t come naturally to most people, she says, so each chapter offers tools, spells and advice to assist in creating comfort, protection and positive energy, according to a press release. There are herbal recipes for clearing sprays and bath salts, an overview of tarot, advice on crystals, ancient homehealing spells and meditations.

In chapter two, Feldmann recommends clearing a space seasonally by “decluttering, deep cleaning and space clearing.” She gives a list of common herbs and plants used for clearing a space. But if burning herbs in your home isn’t an option, Feldmann shares her supereasy recipe for a spray.

Clearing Spray

1 small spray bottle (about 30 ml/2 fluid ounces)

Sage essential oil

Sage essence, optional Other favorite essential oils, optional

Spring water

Witch hazel (or vodka) Charge an empty glass spray bottle on a sunny windowsill for a few hours. Put a few drops of sage essential oil into the bottle. You can also add a few drops of a tincture made from sage essence, which can be found at many health food stores. Feel free to add other essential oils, like lavender and mint, for aromatherapy purposes. Fill the bottle threequarters of the way with spring water and the last quarter of the way with witch hazel, which acts as a preservative. You can also use vodka.

Spray around your space.
