DeBerry, coveted 2021 recruit, picks UConn
Amari DeBerry, a 6foot5 forward from Buffalo, N.Y., and one of the premier prospects in the Class of 2021, announced her commitment to UConn Friday night.
DeBerry, who revealed her decision on Twitter, is the topranked forward and No. 5 overall prospect in her class, according to ESPN.
“Super excited to announce my commitment to coach (Geno) Auriemma and staff at the university of Connecticut #GoHuskies #Committed,” DeBerry wrote, along with pictures of herself wearing a UConn shirt.
DeBerry was on campus last week for an unofficial visit, along with Isuneh Brady, a 63 forward from San Diego and the thirdranked prospect in the Class of 2022. Both players had the opportunity to meet with former UConn standouts Breanna Stewart and Kaleena MosquedaLewis, as well as the current team.
DeBerry’s the Huskies’ second commit in her class, joining 62 guard Saylor Poffenbarger, the No. 17 overall player out of Maryland. The Huskies’ roster now sits at 12 players for the 202122 season.
Although she’s only 16years old, she’s already taller than anyone on this season’s roster at UConn outside of 65 sophomore
Olivia NelsonOdoda. DeBerry is a bigtime scorer, having accumulated over 1,500 points in two seasons at Williamsville South High School. She chose UConn over offers from several other prominent programs, including Baylor, Louisville, Maryland and Notre Dame.
DeBerry also has experience on the national stage, having been selected to the U.S. U16 National Team in May. She also participated in the 3x3 U18 National Championships in Colorado Springs, Co.
The Huskies are scheduled to tip off this season on Sunday (1 p.m.) against Cal at Gampel Pavilion.
