UConn reports 5 new coronavirus cases
The University of Connecticut reported five new coronavirus cases among students Saturday, three of which occurred on campus.
Stephanie Reitz, university spokeswoman, said there are 69 confirmed or suspected coronavirus cases at the school’s Storrs campus, including three cases that were reported overnight.
During the school year, 179 students on campus and, since initial re-entry testing ended Sept. 13, 67 off-campus, have tested positive for COVID-19, she said.
A total of 195 students who were positive and/or symptomatic have been treated by Student Health and Wellness at the school and recovered, she said.
The on-campus positive rate for residential students at the Storrs campus is 1.38 percent, Reitz said. As of Sept. 19, that figure stood at 1.02 percent, Reitz said previously. As of Sept. 11, the rate was at 0.72 percent.
“UConn continues to test hundreds of students on a regular day as part of ongoing surveillance efforts. This surveillance includes testing for randomly selected students, as well as asymptomatic on- or off-campus Storrs students who request a test as a precaution,” Reitz said. “UConn also continues testing wastewater from several oncampus spots to assess the presence of COVID-19 virus as a way to predict and limit the potential scope of outbreak.”
The university has made statistics related to the COVID-19 pandemic publicly available on an online dashboard.
There are 129 active cases at Sacred Heart University in Fairfield, according to that institution, including 87 in the last week. The positive rate there stands at 1.7 percent.
At Yale University, 18 people have tested positive since Aug. 1, including one in the last week; at Trinity College, there were 10 active cases as of Sept. 24.
There are two cases at the University of New Haven, according to that institution. One case has been reported at the University of Bridgeport; one has been reported at Quinnipiac University, according to those institutions.
