Regina Krummel
Regina (Rifka) Krummel, age 90 of Norwalk, died in her home in Norwalk on September 6, 2021, with her husband of 60 years, William M. Krummel, by her side. Regina was born December 30, 1930, in New York City, NY, the daughter of the late Yetta (Papish) and Aaron Pomeranz and the sister of Kalman Pomeranz (d. 1985). Regina was a 40-year resident of Norwalk. Regina attended Music and Art High School in New York, NY, received a bachelor’s degree from New York University, and a doctorate in education from Teacher’s College, Columbia University (1966). Dr. Regina Krummel taught at Queens College, City University of New York (1967-1995), where she advanced to the rank of Full Professor and was voted by Board of Trustees to become a Professor Emerita. Regina and her husband Bill were dedicated residents of Norwalk. Bill was President of Norwalk State Technical College (1980-86). Regina was active in localpolitics and served as a Justice of the Peace. In retirement, Regina remained very active in teaching. This included running a creative writing program, “The Layers of Our Lives,” at the Jewish Community Center in Bridgeport (starting in 1998); leading creative writing classes at Norwalk Community College (until 2019); initiating creative writing workshops in Correctional Facilities in Connecticut, New York, and internationally; and conducting educational workshops internationally in Zimbabwe, China, and India. In total, Regina was the author of five novels and published her poetry in journals and edited volumes. In life, Regina wanted to help inmates, especially women, discover they had a poetic voice, and she especially achieved that mission when she edited and compiled a book of poetry by the inmates of Bedford Hills Maximum Security Prison, The Gates Clang Shut (2012). Regina believed in living as an endless search for expanding one’s knowledge of and about the world through teaching and exploring new cultures. She is survived by her spouse of sixty years, William Marion Krummel of Norwalk, Connecticut; three children: Miriamne Ara Krummel of Dayton, Ohio (m. Matt Adkins); Daniel Aaron Pomeranz Krummel of Cincinnati, Ohio (m. Soma Sen Gupta); and Joseph Krummel of Garrison, NY (m. Rachel Shapiro); and six grandchildren: Yetta Krummel-Adkins, Shoshana Krummel-Adkins, Amita Pomeranz, Maya Pomeranz, Phoebe Krummel, and Apollo Krummel. A private ceremony was held on Sunday, September 12 in Norwalk.
