10 YEARS AGO

The Norwalk High-Brien McMahon co-op hockey team lost to perennial power New Canaan 9-1, but the story of the game was sophomore goalie Anthony Chiaramont­e, who made his first start for the Norwalkers and recorded a remarkable 76 saves. Chiaramont­e, who stopeed 23 shots in the first period, 25 in the second and 28 in the final stanza, broke the co-op program record of 72 set by Mike Diaz during the 2007-08 season. Diaz is now the co-op team’s goaltender coach and works with Chiaramont­e at practice. Bo Hickey, now in his 18th season as New Canaan’s head hockey coach, called Chiaramont­e’s effort “Incredible,” adding, “It’s one of the better performanc­es I’ve seen for the amount of shots taken.”

In girls hockey, a pair of local sophomores played a key role as the Wilton-McMahon-Norwalk co-op team beat the Fairfield co-op 7-4 at the Wonderland of Ice in Bridgeport. Nicole Lue of McMahon scored a hat trick, while Alex Marcarelli of Norwalk High made her first in goal and came up with six big saves in the third period to preserve the lead.

Another co-op program, the Norwalk-McMahon boys swim team, picked up its first win of the season, defeating Kennedy High of Waterbury 100-83. In improving to 1-3, the local swimmers won 10 of the 11 events, including two apiece by Sherman Lau (50 and 100 freestyles), Dillon DiGuglielm­o (200 free, 100 backstroke) and Anthony Dell’Isola (200 IM, 100 breaststro­ke). The trio was also part of two winning relay teams with Eddie Donovan.

25 YEARS AGO

The Norwalk High wrestling team made it a perfect “10” as in a 10-0 record after the state’s fifthranke­d team swept No. 8 Bristol Eastern 38-31, East Haven 63-7 and East Hartford 58-7 in a quadmeet. Gary Koenig at 215 pounds recorded three quick pins in 16, 17 and 56 seconds, while Warren Pena (112 pounds), Nelson Chirillo (119), Chris Armstrong (140), Jason Singer (145), JP Destruge (152) and Neil Godleski (160) also went 3-0 on the day.

Meanwhile, Brien McMahon won two of three matches as the Senators beat New Milford 47-36 and Branford 48-36 while losing to Platt Tech 46-36. Tyron Bullock (135) and Dan Walsh (189) both went 3-0 to raise their season record to 17-0, while Ryan LeBlanc (171) and Darryl McCall (215) also went 3-0. LeBlanc, who had two first-round pins, remained unbeaten in dual meets, while McCall, like Bullock, won all three matches by pin.

The Norwalk High boys basketball team won its fifth straight game, defeating Danbury 76-61 as the defending FCIAC and Class LL state champions improved to 6-0 in the conference and 8-1 overall. Keith Sellers continued his hot shooting, scoring 23 points and grabbing eight rebounds, both team highs. Paco Fabian added 13 points, seven assists and four steals, Brandon Miles had 11 points and six steals, and Joe Cantey added seven steals and six assists ... McMahon beat Ridgefield 75-61 as Joe Howell scored 24 points and Terrell Abraham tallied 18 for the Senators.

Several stellar offensive performanc­es highlighte­d play in the

Norwalk Athletic Associatio­n Girls Basketball League. Kelli Miklovich scored 17 points and Erin Finch had 14 to lead the Huskies past the Hoosiers 36-14 ... The Hoosiers bounced back to defeat the Knicks 30-21 as Marva Dash led the way with 14 points ... Anne Leone scored 13 points for the Sonics, who beat the Rebels 22-13.

50 YEARS AGO

The surging Brien McMahon hockey team not only posted its most impressive win of the season, but its most exciting as Steve Mattiello scored with 15 seconds left to give the Senators a 2-1 win over Darien at Crystal Rink. McMahon, now 7-1-1, trailed 1-0 after the first period, but Joe Lynch tied it at 6:55 of the second period off an assist from Steve Dunne, setting the stage for Mattiello’s game-winner.

The McMahon wrestling team also continued its winning ways as the Senators posted an impressive 36-9 non-league win over highly touted Milford High before a large home crowd in Milford. In raising their record to 5-1, the Norwalkers won 10 of the 12 weight classes, including firstround pins by Jack Bergamini at 112 pounds and Kermond Taylor at 132.

Former Norwalk High AllFCIAC basketball player Bobby Miller enjoyed his best game in a Niagara University uniform as he scored a career-high 20 points in the Purple Eagles’ 95-69 win over Cornell at the Queens City Invitation­al in Buffalo. The junior forward, who was averaging 9 points a game, made 9-of-11 field goal attempts and also had five steals. Miller is the younger brother of former Niagara AllAmerica­n and current NBA guard Calvin Murphy, who earlier that week came off the bench to score 28 points and dish out 12 assists in leading the Houston Rockets to a 119-110 win over the Seattle SuperSonic­s.

Defending champion Perkin Elmer and Nash Engineerin­g posted victories in the Norwalk Recreation Industrial Basketball League to remain tied for first with 3-0 records. Sheldon Herold fired in 34 points to lead PE past Norden’s 64-59, while Nash held off Burndy 54-48 behind 20 points by Mike Herring.
