Officials: 9 escape fire in South Norwalk

NORWALK — Officials say nine residents escaped a fire that destroyed a multi-family home Tuesday night.

Norwalk firefighte­rs responded to the 40th block of Lexington Avenue, where the fire had started in a bedroom around 10 p.m., Deputy Fire Chief Stephen Shay said in a news release.

The fire “quickly spread to the floors above,” he said.

The belongings of the residents were destroyed and the home was gutted by the fire. Authoritie­s have declared it unfit for occupancy.

The Red Cross is assisting the residents displaced by the fire.

The cause of the fire remains under investigat­ion, Shay said.
