Ranking the top upsets in quarterfinals

- By Pete Paguaga

There were plenty of upsets in the quarterfinal rounds of the CIAC football playoffs and we are still talking about some of the results.

Here are the CliffsNotes:

Five of the 10 teams in the most recent GameTimeCT media poll bowed out of the state tournament.

Half of the No.1 seeds in the tournament lost.

Class M and Class S are the only divisions to have the top four seeds advance.

In Class SS, a No. 6 seed is hosting a semifinal game.

Two games came down to potential game-winning field goals, both missed.

Road teams went 11-13 or if you like it this way, home teams went just 13-11.

Either way you slice it, Tuesday night was a crazy night of high school football, so we decided to rank and break down some of the top upsets from the quarterfinal round.

1. No. 8 Cheshire 24, No. 1 St. Joseph 14 (Class L):

“So, when I have the ball in space, you have to watch out.” Those are smart words from Cheshire star Matt Jeffery after he led Cheshire to an upset win over St. Joseph. He is going to the University of Notre Dame after all.

The Hogs entered the game at 9-1 and were the No. 2 team in the GameTimeCT media poll. The Rams backed into the playoffs, losing three of their last four regularseason games.

St. Joseph would roll, yeah?

(All 10 of the GameTimeCT staffers — the 8-Ball is on staff at this point — picked St. Joseph.)

Wrong. The Rams came out and put up the first 10 points of the game and despite allowing the Hogs to take a 14-10 lead into the half, that was it. The defense locked down and Jeffery went to work.

The win was Cheshire’s first in the postseason since the 2009 Class LL champi
