Julia Bullock walks her own path in solo album debut
"Walking in the Dark," Julia Bullock (Nonesuch)
Soprano Julia Bullock is one of the most talented singers of her generation and her first solo album offers a mix of unconventional and deeply personal choices. "Walking in the Dark" showcases her vocal range with selections that include classical, traditional spiritual and more popular song. The Associated Press reviewer Mike Silverman says that Bullock has the artistry to pull it all off and give listeners some surprises. Bullock collaborates with her husband Christian Reif, who accompanies her on piano and conducts the London Philharmonic Orchestra on some tracks. Silverman writes the effect is powerful and the album's one downside is that it feels too short.
