STAMFORD – NBC Sports confirmed this week that it had recently laid off a “very small number” of Stamford-based employees who primarily worked in digital-focused positions.

The Stamford-based broadcaster declined to specify the number of job cuts or the reasons for making them, but the layoffs are possibly the result of broader measures to reduce costs.

In September, Bloomberg reported that NBC Sports’ parent company, Comcast, was looking to cut as much as $1 billion from the budget of the TV networks of its NBCUniversal business.

NBC Sports, which is headquartered at 1 Blachley Road on Stamford’s east side, still ranks as one of the largest employers in the city, with a local workforce that ranges from approximately 750 to 800 people.

The broadcaster produces programs across a range of leagues and competitions, including the NFL, college football, Major League Baseball, professional golf events, NASCAR and English Premier League soccer.

Its “Sunday Night Football” has ranked as the No. 1 prime-time show for a record 11 consecutive years.

Reflecting the growing popularity of fantasy sports and sports betting, NBC Sports’ new initiatives in the 2022 NFL season include a partnership with one of the biggest sportsbooks, BetMGM, that includes integrations on “Football Night in America,” the most-watched sports studio show, and content across other NBC Sports platforms.

Among other key changes in the past year, NBC Sports shut down its NBCSN cable channel at the end of 2021. It moved the programming on that channel to other NBCUniversal platforms – including the USA Network on cable and Peacock streaming service.
