KEEP AN EYE ON

Short staffed: UConn’s injury woes have once again depleted Geno Auriemma’s rotation.

Despite avoiding back-to-back losses on Thursday, the No. 6 Huskies may have lost starting point guard Nika Muhl to an apparent head injury.

The sophomore got hit by a Princeton player under the basket and then got hit in the back of the head by Aaliyah Edwards’ knee as she was falling to the floor. Muhl was slow to get up and needed assistance in getting back on her feet. She was immediately ushered into the locker room and didn’t return to the bench for the rest of the game.

As of Friday, UConn did not have an update on Muhl’s status or availability heading into Sunday’s game at No. 20 Maryland. If she is out, the Huskies with likely only seven available players — with only five fully healthy.

Still no Juhasz: Juhász missed her sixth straight game on Thursday after breaking her thumb against Texas on Nov. 14. UConn coach Geno Auriemma said that while the graduate forward has returned to practices, she’s still not mentally ready to return.

Scouting the Terps: Maryland is also battling the injury bug.

Brenda Frese’s team was down to nine available players on Thursday. The team has lost two players to season-ending injuries, had another sit out because of an illness while another is day-to-day with a lower-body injury, according to the Washington Post.

The Terps defeated Purdue 77-74 Thursday thanks to a buzzer-beater from Shyanne Sellers. That was Frese’s 600th career win and the Terps’ second buzzerbeater win of the season.

On Dec. 1, Diamond Miller sank a shot at the buzzer to upset then No. 7 Notre Dame in South Bend for the program’s first road win over a top-10 team since 2016.

Maryland’s three losses this season have come against No. 1 South Carolina (Nov. 11, 81-56), DePaul (Nov. 25, 76-67) and Nebraska (Dec. 4, 90-67). The Terps started the season ranked No. 17 in the AP Top 25 Poll. The highest they’ve been ranked this year so far was at No. 14 in week three after beating No. 17 Baylor in Texas 73-68.

UConn is 7-0 all-time against Maryland after last meeting on Nov. 19, 2017 in Hartford (UConn won 97-72).
