NEW CANAAN — A 40-year-old New Jersey man is facing charges after police say he stole credit cards from vehicles at Waveny Park and then used them to make purchases at several Connecticut stores, according to the warrant for his arrest.

Yeury C. Tavarez is charged with third-degree conspiracy to commit burglary, fourth-degree conspiracy to commit larceny, two counts of fifth-degree conspiracy to commit larceny, three counts of second-degree identity theft and three counts of illegal use of a payment card, according to warrant for his arrest.

Tavarez, along with two other people, stole several credit cards from a parked car at Waveny Park sometime on July 15, the warrant said. The complainant told police there were several new charges on the stolen cards but he had canceled them after he noticed.

Tavarez and the other two suspects spent more than $4,600 at two Norwalk stores, buying gift cards, jeans and water, according to the warrant.

Around a month later, another complainant told police credit cards had been stolen from their car, which also had been parked at Waveny Park. the warrant says. The complainant told police her credit cards had been used for two Home Depot purchases totaling more than $2,500, which consisted of some gift cards, it said.

Tavarez and his associates were identified through surveillance footage at the different stores in Norwalk and Waveny

Park, according to the warrant, which also said that police saw several of the purchased gift cards being redeemed in New Jersey.

Investigators believe Yeury and another suspect were involved with using stolen credit cards at a Walmart, the warrant said.

Court records show that Yeury was scheduled to appear in court Feb. 9 and was not released from custody.
