- By Andrew DaRosa

A house designed by esteemed architect Allan J. Gelbin has hit the market in Wilton with an asking price $2.5 million, according to Berkshire Hathaway Home Services, New England Properties, who has listed the house at 32 Deer Run Road. The mid-century modern estate, which was built in 1961, is among the most notable pieces of Gelbin’s work in the state.

Gelbin was the protégé to Frank Lloyd Wright, beginning as his apprentice in 1949, according to the Art Institute of Chicago. He was the general contractor and supervisor for three homes designed by Wright, including one in New Canaan. Gelbin started his own practice in Connecticut in 1957 and had three homes in Ridgefield.

The 2.6 acre property was last sold in 2021 for $985,000, according to Wilton property records. Previously, the house sold for $445,000 in 1999. The house

was renovated in 2021 by the Norwalk-based Skyview Builders, which included new wooden cabinetry, polished concrete floors and updated kitchen and bathrooms.

At 3,035 square-feet of space, the house has three bedrooms and three bathrooms as well as two patios, a pool with a built-in spa, a

wildflower lawn and two family rooms. The house also has private lake access. The house incorporates the mid-century modern motif of “bringing the outdoors in” with large windows and glass panes, the use of natural materials and the inclusion of seamless transitions between indoor and outdoor spaces.

The house is currently listed as pending as of May 8, according to its listing on Berkshire Hathaway Home Services.

Real estate tracking firm Redfin listed median prices for the house’s 06897 ZIP code at $905,000 in March. Redfin notes that on average, houses in the area often sell for around 11 percent

above list price and are off the market in about 29 days, while the hottest houses sell for 20 percent above the asking price and are only on the market for about 16 days.
