Scrim­mages Pre­pare Mus­tang Ath­letes For 2018 Cam­paign

The 2018 fall sports sea­son is upon us and Oak­dale High School teams have re­turned to the court, pool, course and, for cross coun­try, wide open spa­ces. This past week a hand­ful of Mus­tang pro­grams held scrim­mages to get ready for their sea­son open­ers.

Lady Mus­tang golfers got back in the swing of things on Tues­day, Aug. 14 when they hosted Liv­ingston in a scrim­mage. The girls fol­lowed up with a scrim­mage on Thurs­day, Aug. 16 against Gre­gori. Oak­dale opens up Val­ley Oak League ac­tion when the girls head to Modesto to take on Cen­tral Catholic on Mon­day, Aug. 27. How­ever, the girls still have a few non-league con­tests to go through first. This week the girls host Rock­lin on Wed­nes­day, Aug. 22 at Oak­dale Golf and Coun­try Club at 3 p.m. The fol­low­ing day the team travel to Pleasant Grove.

Fri­day, Aug. 17 cross coun­try held its team scrim­mage at Oak­dale High School where nearly 60 run­ners ran one and a third miles around the school cam­pus. Un­der the di­rec­tion of Head coach Guy Fowler, along with coaches Lori Var­gas and Vic Moreno, the teams were bro­ken down into two groups (boys and girls) out­side of the agri­cul­ture build­ing. This was the team’s only home meet of the year.

“Our goal is to get bet­ter each day. We have some im­pres­sive guys and girls out here and they want to im­prove each day,” said Coach Fowler.

Oak­dale’s girls tennis sea­son be­gan with scrim­mage ac­tion on Tues­day, Aug. 21 when they trav­eled to Pacheco. The girls will host Tur­lock on Thurs­day, Aug. 23 for their fi­nal scrim­mage of the sea­son. This con­test is sched­uled to be­gin at 3:30 p.m. On Tues­day, Aug. 28 the team’s sea­son opens when they travel to Man­teca to take on East Union. The girls will then host Kimball on Thurs­day, Aug. 30.

Boys and girls wa­ter polo held scrim­mages this past week. Coach Diane Kline is pulling dou­ble duty again this year as she is the head coach for both var­sity pro­grams. The girls hosted their an­nual scrim­mage on Satur­day, Aug. 18 while the boys headed to At­wa­ter for a scrim­mage over this past week­end. For the girls team, they will com­pete in the Cen­tral Val­ley Show­down in Clo­vis this week­end. On Tues­day, Sept. 4 the girls host Rio Amer­i­cano in league play. As for the boys they will be off un­til Wed­nes­day, Sept. 5 when they travel to take on Vin­tage.

Vol­ley­ball girls are get­ting set for their sea­son as they trav­eled to Hugh­son to take on the Huskies in non­league ac­tion Tues­day, Aug. 21. The road con­test took place fol­low­ing The Leader’s press time. The girls con­tinue non-league play when they travel to Sonora on Thurs­day, Aug. 23. Oak­dale will have their home opener on Tues­day, Aug. 28 against Escalon. Coach­ing the var­sity girls team will be Heather Gon­za­les, ju­nior var­sity will be coached by Jac­kee Peter­son and Ken­dra Whor­ton is the fresh­man coach.
