The Oakdale Leader - - SPORTS -

It was a successful week for both the freshman and junior varsity Oakdale High School football teams.

For the JV Mustangs, Friday night’s road game against El Capitan on Aug. 31 was a big confidence booster. The Colts racked up 43 first half points in the 57-7 victory. Oakdale started the game off aggressive and recovered a fumble on the opening kickoff and did not slow down. Seven different players scored for Oakdale and Rylan Kerr scored twice, both touchdowns coming in the first quarter. Kerr is having an impressive start to the season and turned in another 100 yard performance. Donovan Walker, Aaron Jones, Zach Aloisio, Jay Hummer, Steven Graff and Cole Snyder all found the end zone for Oakdale as well.

“It was a total team effort tonight,” said head coach Matt Miranda. “We got contributions from everyone who stepped foot out there.”

This Thursday evening Oakdale will play at home against St. Mary’s following the freshman game. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.

On Wednesday, Aug. 29 the Ponies headed to Pleasanton to take on Amador Valley. Originally the team was scheduled for a home game on Thursday evening against El Capitan. The game, however, was canceled due to lack of transportation for El Capitan.

“It was not ideal for us, but we are excited to get back on the field,” said head coach Rodney Long.

The freshmen were coming off a bye week and had not played since Aug. 16.

Oakdale accepted the invitation against Amador Valley and battled for a 17-14 victory. Down 8-0 late in the first half, kicker Kevin Camelin connected on a 27-yard field goal for Oakdale. Trailing 14-3 in the third, Oakdale did not lose poise. A 65-yard rushing touchdown by Jose Torres trimmed the deficit down to 14-10 with just five minutes remaining in the third quarter. Yahir Ayala scored the go-ahead touchdown with less than two minutes remaining in the game when he exploded for a 40 yard score to go up 17-14.

Oakdale welcomes St. Mary’s to town this Thursday night with a special 4 p.m. start time.

Steven Graff, 25, outruns the Gaucho defense in the JV team’s 57-7 road win over El Capitan.
