Cases of COVID-19 continue to increase in Michigan,

with 389 cases confirmed on Friday, the highest one-day total for the month of June and the fifth straight day of increases.

Testing results vary because of weekend lab schedules, but the total from the last three days tops 1,000.

The 1,065 new COVID-19 cases from Wednesday through Friday is more than the total from the prior five days.

The situation in Michigan, though, is nothing as severe as what southern states are seeing as the coronavirus outbreak is exploding in Texas, Florida, and Arizona. Overall, the United State is seeing cases rising on a nationwide basis, but Michigan is not near its peak outbreak seen in late March and throughout April.

But Gov. Gretchen Whitmer

and state health officials continue to reinforce the need for everyone in Michigan to wear face masks to decrease the rate of new infections, hoping to avoid a return of large community spread of COVID-19, the disease caused by coronavirus, especially as the outbreaks in the south forced their governors to close bars in Florida and Texas on Friday.

The 389 new cases on Friday in Michigan is the daily largest increase since May 31, bringing the statewide total of confirmed cases to 62,695. With the 6,634 cases labeled as probable,

the total number of cases is 69,329.

The good news on Friday, though, is that only two deaths were reported, pushing the total to 5,889. With deaths labeled as probable, the total number of deaths is 6,134.

Michigan is approaching 1 million diagnostic tests, with 998,490 given through Friday.

The coronavirus pandemic

continues to dominate headlines throughout the U.S., as the number of cases have now reached 2.45 million with nearly 125,000 people killed, according to the data compiled by Johns Hopkins University.

Globally, nearly 9.7 million cases have been confirmed with more than 491,000 people killed.

Local details

Ingham County, where an East Lansing brewpub drew national attention after more than 40 cases were connected to the eatery,

added 42 cases on Friday, up to 913. It is up 87 cases in three days.

In western Michigan, Kent County added 53 cases to reach 4,389, up 105 cases in the past two days.

Wayne County, excluding Detroit, has added another 63 cases to reach 10,144, with another 377 listed as probable. The area has added 112 cases in two days.

Detroit, however, the hardest-hit community in Michigan, added just eight cases on Friday, leaving a total of 11,500.

Macomb County added

27 cases, and Oakland County added 21 cases.

Macomb County now has 7,074 cases confirmed with another 178 listed as probable, with 901 total deaths, of which 37 are probable.

Oakland County now has 8,754 confirmed cases and 3,089 probable cases for a total of 11,843. Overall, 1,084 have died in Oakland County, with 42 of them listed as probable.

In mid-Michigan, Isabella County added two more cases to reach 100, also having another 21 probable cases.
