Outbreaks reported at 3 schools
Of the 87 new outbreaks at Michigan schools reported last week, 12 of them occurred at three Oakland County schools. For the previous week, there were eight outbreaks in the county of the 136 in the state.
An outbreak, as defined by the state, is two or more cases that have shared exposure on school grounds and are from different households.
New outbreaks were reported at Carpenter Elementary in Lake Orion (2 with students and staff), University High School in Ferndale (two with students) and Lawrence Tech in Southfield (eight with students).
An ongoing outbreak is listed at just one Oakland County school — Pine Knob Elementary in Clarkston.
Ongoing outbreaks are those that had already been identified in previous weeks but have had at least one new associated case reported to the local health department in the last 28 days.
Four schools in Oakland County were removed from the outgoing list including Kent Lake Elementary in South Lyon, Holy Name in
Birmingham, Our Lady of the Lakes High School in Waterford and Everest Collegiate in Clarkston.
The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services releases the school outbreak data each Monday.
Gov. Gretchen Whitmer has set a goal to make inperson learning available by March 1 for every student in the state.
Case counts for schoolrelated outbreaks include those associated with beforeand after-school programs (including schoolsponsored sports). When applicable, outbreak reporting also includes cases originating from on-campus and off-campus student housing.
In other outbreak news in region 2N which includes Oakland, Macomb and St. Clair counties, last week there were nine new outbreaks at long-term care facilities; seven in manufacturing and construction; five at health care facilities; three at office settings; and zero in restaurants and bars.
