The city of Pontiac will hold a public hearing early next month on how it plans to spend its annual Community Development Block Grant.

The federal funding from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development is awarded to municipalities each year for projects that will enhance quality of life in the community. Pontiac is slated to receive $798,883 for its program year 2021.

Pontiac plans to spend the majority of its funding on sidewalk repair throughout the city. A total of $384,218 is currently budgeted for those projects.

Another $175,000 would go towards the rehabilitation of the city’s two senior centers, the Robert Bowen Senior Center and the Ruth Peterson Senior Center. The repair of those centers has been the topic of discussion and debate in the city for several years.

Crime awareness and prevention programs would see $139,665 in funding. The city plans to increase its staffing levels, pay for new security cameras and monitoring.

Lastly, $100,000 would be budgeted for neighborhood cleanup projects. This includes trash and debris removal, cleanup campaign, graffiti removal and code enforcement for trash violations.

The public hearing will be held at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, March 9. Public comments must be submitted in writing by 5 p.m. on Tuesday, March 5 to publiccomments@pontiac.mi.us. Comments can also be sent directly to the city clerk’s office at gdoyle@pontiac. mi.us. The meeting will take place on the city’s social media accounts and on PontiacTV at pontiac.mi.us.
