After an hours-long standoff with police, a man has been shot and hospitalized in Royal Oak Saturday, Feb. 27.

According to the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office, a 34-yearold man had gotten into a domestic dispute with his father, assaulting him.

When police arrived around 2 p.m., the man was “heavily armed” and wearing body armor.

Royal Oak police made contact with the man over the phone, attempting to get the man to peacefully surrender. Several gunshots came from within the house, going through the window.

The man told police his door was “rigged” to prevent them from entering, and threatened to shoot them multiple times.

During this time, residents were advised to shelter in place on Oliver Road, Galpin Avenue, Glenview Avenue and Glenwood Road. Police advised staying away from windows, and sheltering in basements if possible.

The Oakland County SWAT team took over the scene at approximately 4 p.m., continuing negotiations with the man.

SWAT team members sent in a robot and drone to search the house. The man reportedly disabled the drone, and put on a gas mask.

Around 8:30 p.m., the man came near the front of his house and pointed his rifle at deputies. A member of the SWAT team shot him.

After the man was given first aid, the Royal Oak Fire Department transported him to William Beaumont Hospital.
