A child is waiting: Marcus loves school, play, sports, friends

- By Honey Murray

Twelve-year-old Marcus is known for his sense of humor.

“He’s a super-funny kid,” one of his workers shares. “He enjoys telling jokes of all kinds, from ‘knockknock’ to riddles.”

But Marcus is very serious when he describes himself and his desire to have a forever family.

“…I’m creative and have a zest for life, I’m intelligent, I’m funny,” Marcus says, smiling shyly in his video (on www.mare.org), “and, I can be a good friend.

“I like playing video games — but not too much… I like Legos; I like playing outside and climbing trees, I like going shopping…I like organizing.

“I’m looking for a brother,” he continues, “someone to hang out with…a mom and dad, maybe a cat or dog.”

“Whenever I am with Marcus,” his worker says, “he always is telling me about all the activities he enjoys. The last time we talked, he was memorizing the bones in the human body.

“He always makes me smile or laugh and is very caring and empathetic for others and very polite. Marcus is very good at finding the positive qualities in others and focusing on the positive sides of situations.”

Marcus enjoys all of school. His favorite subjects are history and science.

“Seriously,” he says, “school allows me to learn new things and experience everything. After school, I like to rest and then go outside and play with rocks and break them open to see what’s inside.

“I love being outside… A friend taught me how to play cricket, and I love it. I know self-defense and took three years of martial arts training.”

Marcus has played football and soccer, and he enjoys

having foot races and building forts with friends.

“I believe Marcus needs a family who enjoys doing all types of activities — from outdoor sports to having a movie night at home,” his worker says. “He also needs a family who is patient and able to give him the attention he deserves. Marcus appears to be laid-back, but he thrives on relationships he builds with others.”

Marcus has his own dreams of the type of forever family he seeks.

“I would like to toss a ball with my adoptive dad. I would also like to play football or nerf wars and to just chill. I want to have household chores and be treated like any other kid in a family.

“I believe that I have lived a good life, even without a mom and dad,” he shares. “I learned how to walk and talk from my grandparents, and I think I had a good childhood.

“With a forever family, I would be excited to have family to talk to, people who stick up for me, restore my self-esteem and pick me up when I am down…to have them care for me and to have a home.”
