Man charged with sex crime heading to circuit court
A case against a 65-yearold man charged with a sex crime against a special needs teen has been bound over to Oakland County Circuit Court after a preliminary exam was waived in district court.
William Medina faces one court of third-degree criminal sexual conduct — incest which allegedly happened in Auburn Hills.
Charges were filed in last October, and Medina was locked up in the Oakland County Jail earlier this month after he was extradited from Pennsylvania. He remains there, with bond set at $25,000.
“The accusations are that he raped a 16-yearold with autism,” assistant prosecutor Jacob Stamell said in court Monday, before 52-3 District Judge Nancy Carniak.
Stamell also said that Medina implicated himself when interviewed by authorities in Pennsylvania.
Defense attorney Neal Brand requested Carniak lower bond for Medina, stating that he has “tremendous family support,” maintains his innocence and “is likely to appear’’ at all court hearings. Carniak turned him down, noting that Medina had to be extradited, as well as the “nature and seriousness of the offense.”
Medina, whose communication in court is through a Spanish-English interpreter, was originally charged with first-degree criminal sexual conduct, but that has since been amended to the third-degree CSC charge. He faces up to life in prison if convicted.
An arraignment date in Oakland County Circuit Court is pending.
