New chief named for police department

A 23-year veteran of the Milford Police Department has been named its next police chief.

Lt. Scott Tarasiewicz, who joined the department soon after graduating from Lake Superior State University in 1999, was recently selected to take the department’s reins as Chief Tom Lindberg retires on June 30 after nearly 10 and a-half years.

For now, Tarasiewicz said he’s been working with Lindberg and the Village of Milford administration as he prepares for his new role.

“I have gained invaluable knowledge from the chief, and believe much of that wisdom has put me in a very good position,” Tarasiewicz said. “As an internal candidate, I am grateful I was able to further my career and the goals of the department through seeking opportunities and professional development. I am truly humbled by the support of the village manager and the community as a whole.”

Tarasiewicz said that “with any new chief also comes change” — and that the changes will emerge “strategically and incrementally.”

“Implementing a vision takes time and I do not intend on overwhelming my staff,” he said. “We have an excellent group of men and women, and the residents should feel completely confident in their department.”

The Milford Police Department has a sworn-in staff of 20.

As for Lindberg, the outgoing chief said he hasn’t any set plans for the next chapter in his life — except to take a few months off before deciding whether to pursue something parttime or full-time. He said wherever he lands won’t be law enforcement-related though, noting that “37 years is enough.”

Prior to coming to Milford, Lindberg served with the Novi Police Department for 26 and a-half years — including as deputy chief of police.

Lindberg said he’s seen a lot of changes and plenty of growth in the Milford Police Department during his tenure there, as well as “a lot of paradigm shifts.”

“I’m glad I was along for the ride,” he said.

Tarasiewicz will face “some challenges” but is certainly up for them, Lindberg said, adding: “I look forward to seeing him succeed.”

Tarasiewicz holds a bachelor’s of science degree in criminal justice, graduated as class vice president from the Northwestern Center for Public Safety School of Police Staff and Command in 2013, and is one class away from earning a master’s degree in criminal justice leadership and intelligence.

The Milford Police Department services Milford Township including the Village of Milford.
