Troy’s Dan Wood tied atop Syron Memorial leaderboard

Having kids generally does not leave you as much time for your hobbies and passions as you had before.

Shoot, a lot of times it doesn’t even leave you as much time for sleep.

With a seven-week-old baby at home, Troy’s Dan Wood didn’t know if he’d be able to break away for his usual spot in the Frank Syron Memorial Tournament on the weekend of the Fourth of July holiday. And even if he did, he wasn’t sure how much rust there would be, since he’d only managed to play 18 holes twice prior to Friday’s first round.

“They say that having kids doesn’t do good things for your golf game … I don’t know what happened yesterday,” Wood said after finishing Saturday’s round with a one-over-par 73, after shooting a tournament low 65 a day earlier. “I didn’t have a whole lot of expectations, so where I’m at is great.”

He sits atop the leaderboard with a two-round total of 138, tied with Anthony Sorentino,

who shot a second-round 70 to go with his 68 on Friday. Jon Quigley and Brian Lesperance shot 68 and 69, respectively, to move into the final foursome of Sunday’s final round.

They’re tied with Dan Alcock — who shot a first-round 67 and a 72 on Saturday — for third on the leaderboard, with Greg Davies one stroke back at 140.

In all, there are 10 golfers within five strokes of the lead, headed into the final round.

Razmig Boghikian, Jason May and Lucas Belanger are all tied at 141, with Sean Friel at a 1-under 143, and Drew Cable, Austin Kreger and Drew Gandy all at par (144).

While Wood has played in the tournament double-digit times — and familiarity with the course certainly offset some of the rust — finding himself in the final foursome is a new experience. But then again, he wasn’t even sure if he’d find himself on the course.

“I did ask,” Wood said of getting permission to play from his wife, Kayleigh, who he called a ‘rock star’ for shouldering the parenting load. “She said ‘Go for it.’”

The baby wasn’t as accepting, though, waking up a handful of times throughout the night.

“Last night wasn’t one of the better ones,” Wood said with a grin.

While Wood shot a 4-under 32 on the back nine on Friday, with birdies on 10, 12, 13 and 18, he was 2-over on that same stretch on Saturday, with a bogies on 10

and 16.

Sorrentino took the turn three strokes back, but birdied on 10 and 12 to take a brief one-stroke lead before bogeying 17 to wind up tied headed to 18, where both carded a five.

Play will start at 7:30 a.m. for Sunday’s final round of the tournament,

with the lead foursome going off at 11:30 a.m.
