Cannabis company Pleasantrees this morning plans to begin selling recreational product for adults only at its Mount Clemens location.

But it’s not clear how that can happen, considering the Mount Clemens City Commission has yet to award any permits for recreational marijuana.

Pleasantrees on Friday notified area media of their plans to offer recreational pot from their store at 237 North River Road, formerly known as Gibraltar Trade Center. The advisory states the opening is a “victory for the very public and long-awaited approval process for recreational sales in Mount Clemens.”

“The opening of our Mount Clemens’ location is a major foundational piece of our successful expansion here in Macomb County. This location is most certainly a flagship for Pleasantrees and will ultimately become a major destination for cannabis consumers far and wide,” the company’s CEO and founder Randy Buchman said in a statement.

The property is well situated off Interstate 94 and is a well-known landmark in Macomb County, easily recognizable because of a giant sign with a mustached man in a brown suit. Gibraltar closed the location in 2017 after 37 years in business.

Pleasantrees says it will serve “as one of the first approved cannabis dispensaries” to sell cannabis in Mount Clemens.

Mount Clemens Mayor Laura Kropp said the city hasn’t awarded any recreational licenses yet.;

“(Pleasantrees has) followed the rules thus far and I don’t have any reason to believe they would jeopardize their medical license” by prematurely opening for recreational sales, the mayor said in a statement.

Business James George originally bought the building in 2017 and was awarded a license to grow, dispense and process medical marijuana in the building.

Pleasantrees has since taken over 25,000 square feet of the 250,000-squarefoot building for its provisioning center and the beverage processing facility.

In February, Pleasantrees opened its Mount Clemens location as a provisioning center for medical cannabis sales and a beverage processing facility, which recently launched its first cannabis infused seltzer, Highly Casual in November.

Mount Clemens is the company’s fifth retail location in Michigan, along with stores in Hamtramck, Houghton Lake, East Lansing and Lincoln Park. The company also has cultivation and processing facilities in Harrison Township, and has recently expanded into Massachusetts.

Headquartered in Harrison Township, the company’s expansion will create more jobs for Macomb County residents, as well as catering to a wider customer base looking to support Michigan founded businesses, according to press materials.

Hours are 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. every day.
