‘THE RIGHT ATTITUDE IN EVERYTHING HE DOES’

Groves’s Avery Gach reaches 5-star status, collects offers from Georgia and Alabama

- By Scott Burnstein

It’s been a good month in the Gach family. Birmingham Groves sophomore offensive tackle Avery Gach received his first five-star recruiting ranking from CBS Sports and Prep Football Reports recruiting guru Tom Lemming recently. Rivals and 24/7 Sports both have Gach (6-foot-5, 290 pounds) graded a four-star prospect. NCAA superpowers Alabama, USC and Georgia each offered Gach a scholarship earlier this month, too.

He is the consensus No. 1 player in Oakland County for the Class of 2025.

“Avery has the right attitude in everything he does,” Groves head coach Brendan Flaherty said. “His technique, his footwork and his work ethic are all top rate. I’m not surprised the FBS schools are taking notice and pursuing him.”

Gach’s list of scholarship offers sits at two dozen and growing. Michigan, Michigan State, Ohio State, Notre Dame, Auburn, Miami (FL), Maryland, Colorado, Ole Miss, Penn State and Wisconsin have all offered. He visited Notre Dame for the Fighting Irish spring game in April.

Last fall, Gach recorded 115 pancakes and didn’t allow a single sack on a Groves squad that made a run to the Division 2 final four. Gach and his Falcons are expected to fight it out with Southfield A&T and Harper Woods for the OAA White title in 2023.

Some more offseason news and notes

West Bloomfield defensive end Brandon Davis-Swain (6-5, 245) has been named an Under Armour All-American. Davis de-committed from Notre Dame back in the winter and remains on the FBS recruiting market.

West Bloomfield linebacker Montele Johnson (6-2, 215) has narrowed his college choices to Boston College, Kansas, Louisville, Rutgers and West Virginia.

Diego Rocha, a two-year starter at Waterford Mott, will play his senior season at Waterford Kettering. Rocha (6-0, 180) is one of the best slot receivers in the area.

Clarkston two-sport standout Des Stephens scooped an offer from Virginia to play cornerback in the Cavaliers secondary. On the hardwood, the sleek 6-2 playmaker led the Wolves basketball team to the regional finals this past winter.

Orchard Lake St. Mary’s two-sport standout Jayden Savoury picked up his first football scholarship offer from Toledo. Savoury (6-6, 210) is a Division I recruit as a small forward on the basketball court and plays tight end and defensive end on the gridiron.
