Michigan National Guard hosts ribbon cutting for new women’s facilities at Washtenaw Armory
State elected leadership joined Michigan National Guard officials for a ribbon cutting ceremony at the Michigan Army National Guard Washtenaw Armory, to highlight construction of new facilities for women service members, Jan. 26.
The Michigan Army National Guard (MIARNG) Washtenaw Armory is located at 7400 S. Huron River Drive in Ypsilanti.
The ceremony highlighted the effort to modernize the MIARNG facility to better serve Michigan’s women soldiers, including the addition of new shower and toilet facilities and a lactation room, according to a press release.
The Washtenaw Armory is one of 33 facilities across Michigan, including Pontiac, that is targeted for modernization. At the time the Washtenaw facility was constructed in 1991, the structure and composition of the MIARNG force was primarily male, and facilities like restrooms and showers were designed with that in mind. The total investment for this project is $5.15 million ($3.03 million federal/$2.21 million state), according to the press release.

Holly Area Veterans’ Resource Center needs new facility space
The Holly Area Veterans’ Resource Center is in need of help and ideas to acquire 1500 square feet of office space, according to a press release.
Vietnam veteran and co-director of the center Joe Mishler said, “We are a 501(c)(3) who have been serving the Holly Area as a resource for veterans and their families since October of 2014. We do not charge for any of our services. We are manned by volunteers. We have operating money in our account from donations, but do not have money to rent space. We have been at the Karl Richter center for free because of the generosity of the Village of Holly and the Holly Area Schools. We are being displaced at the end of May because of the new Middle School being built.”
“Holly Area Schools has offered room at the Middle School on N. Holly Road that will not be available until the new school is finished. We will not have operating space for about 1.5 to 2.5 years,” Mishler continued.
