Lunt to join Cowboys this week

THE NEW RECRUIT

PHOENIX — It’s been a busy week for Wes Lunt. And it’s not about to slow down. On Monday, the quarterback helped hold the giant American flag during the national anthem before the Fiesta Bowl and watched from the stands as Oklahoma State captured a thrilling overtime victory against Stanford.

On Tuesday, he played in the first Semper Fidelis All-american Bowl at Chase Field in Phoenix.

On Thursday, he will start the drive from Rochester, Ill., to Stillwater to officially enter the Cowboys’ quarterback competition.

“Absolutely hectic,” Lunt said with a laugh.

Lunt will start classes at OSU on Jan. 9, which means he will be allowed to participate in spring practice. He will battle Clint Chelf and J.W. Walsh for the starting quarterback job, a spot vacated by Brandon Weeden after the Fiesta Bowl.

OSU coach Mike Gundy and offensive coordinator Todd Monken visited Lunt a couple weeks ago to talk about graduating high school early and enrolling at OSU for the spring semester.

“I talked it over with my parents and prayed a lot to God about it,” Lunt said. “That’s kind of how I came to the decision. It just felt right. It’s going to help me physically and mentally.”

Lunt, a 6-foot-5, 205-pound prospect, played two series in the fourth quarter Tuesday night for the East team. He completed three consecutive passes for 18 yards on one drive before being intercepted on a pass that bounced off the chest of a wide open Malik Gilmore.

“I knew there would be a lot of good competition, and there was,” Lunt said. “Our coaches did such a good job. It was a lot of fun. Sometimes, these All-star games aren’t. I met a lot of talented, new kids and I had a good time.”
