Health forum to feature author

Award-winning journalist, author and political figure Sophia A. Nelson will speak at 9 a.m. Saturday at the sixth annual Integris African American Women’s Health Forum in Oklahoma City.

Her talk is free and open to the public.

Nelson, former committee counsel for the House of Representatives, penned the 2011 book, “Black Women Redefined: Dispelling Myths and Discovering Fulfillment in the Age of Michelle Obama.”

The book has earned widespread critical acclaim. Michael Eric Dyson, author and radio show host, described Nelson as “one of the most gifted writers and analysts of our time.” Essence magazine called the book a “game changer.”

“Black Woman Redefined” focuses on challenges faced by collegeeducated black women and provides a road map for challenging stereotypes and thriving in a country led by its first black President.

“She (Nelson) is an accomplished woman on the move ‘redefining’ the rules for 21st century living and success,” according to an Integris news release, “and is an advocate for better representation of black women in the media and society.”

Nelson will speak at the Cox Convention Center, One Myriad Gardens.

Registration and a breakfast will be from 8 to 9 a.m. Nelson’s lecture will be followed by a book signing period and a dessert reception.
