EARLY RUNS NO GUARANTEE FOR SUCCESS

- BY CHARLES SALZER, FOR THE OKLAHOMAN

The first inning has been one of the most prolific for Oklahoma hitters all season, and the Sooners’ first-inning run brought their season total to 45.

Scoring in the opening frame has been a harbinger of success, as the Sooners were 18-4 when scoring in the first inning prior to Saturday’s loss. Oklahoma had been even tougher when scoring first overall, but saw that mark dip to 27-5.

SOONERS BATS’ ACTIVITY CUT SHORT IN THE EARLY GOING

The Sooners had sent the minimum number of batters (12) to the plate early on in their previous two outings, but changed that as 15 Sooners took their cuts. The numbers could have been better, but Oberste hit into an inningending double play in the first, and Max White was picked off first base to end the third.

OVERTON KNOCKED OUT IN SIXTH

Dillon Overton lasted 5 2/3 innings against Connecticut at the Blacksburg Regional, and went the same distance against LSU. Overton left after giving up four runs, three earned, in four innings. Ty Ross’ RBI safety squeeze chased Overton in the sixth.

Overton’s last outing longer than six innings was April 13 at Baylor.

“I’ve never had so much fun on a baseball team in my entire life as I have with these guys,” Overton said after the game. “It’s a blast coming to the yard every day with them, and I’m going to miss it. I wish the guys on the team next year the best of luck. They’re going to be great in this program.”
