Oklahoma Christian pair drafted

For the first time in program history, Oklahoma Christian had a pair of players drafted in the same season.

Right-handed pitchers Cale Coshow and Chris Burgess, both transfers from Oklahoma, were picked on Saturday’s third day of the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft.

Coshow, a sophomore from Deer Creek, was picked by the Yankees in the 13th round, No. 404 overall. Burgess, a senior, was taken by the Phillies in the 26th round, No. 781 overall.

Coshow was 3-5 with a 4.56 ERA in 13 appearances for the Eagles this season. He threw a pair of complete games.

Burgess transferred from OU at the semester break after spending two seasons at Black Hawk (Ill.) Junior College. Burgess was 7-0 with nine saves and a 1.54 ERA in helping OC to a 26-26 record and an appearance in the National Christian College Athletic Association World Series.

Prior to Coshow’s pick, the last Eagles player drafted was Nick Aiello in the 50th round in 2001.

JENSEN, CRABAUGH PICKED FROM OCU

Shortstop Chase Jensen was the first player picked from Oklahoma City University, going No. 658 overall in the 22nd round to the Padres.

The second Stars player taken, though, was even closer to the heart of OCU coach Denney Crabaugh.

That was Crabaugh’s son, Cody, taken by Miami No. 952 overall in the 32nd round.

Jensen hit .332 with 51 RBIs, 11 home runs and 15 stolen bases for the Stars. He played for Houston in 2012 before transferring to OCU.

Crabaugh, a senior right-hander from Edmond North, went 13-2 with a 2.12 ERA and 77 strikeouts in 93 1/3 innings. He led the Sooner Athletic Conference in wins.

SOONERS ADD THREE MORE

Three more Sooners — all lefthanded pitchers — were drafted on Saturday’s final day.

William Waltrip went No. 349 overall to the Rockies, Ethan Carnes went No. 644 to the Yankees and Jake Fisher went No. 664 to the Dodgers.

The Sooners had six players drafted overall, including Jonathan Gray, who was taken third overall Thursday night.

THOMAS FINALLY PICKED

Oklahoma football signee Cody Thomas figured to be an early Friday selection as the draft approached.

But as questions about his signability were raised, Thomas fell down the draft boards.

The outfielder finally went to the Yankees with the 914th pick.

It seems likely the outfielder, who is already in Norman, will be a Sooner.

The quarterback plans on playing both football and baseball at OU.

FIVE WOSC PLAYERS PICKED

Western Oklahoma State College had five players selected Saturday, behind only Oklahoma for the most from any one school in the state this season.

Catcher Sicnark Loopstok was the first off the board, going to the Indians No. 381 overall.

He was followed by outfielder Willie Allen (No. 496, Nationals), righthanded pitcher Alex Polanco (No. 704, Yankees), catcher Sherman Lacrus (No. 820, Rangers) and righthanded pitcher Edward Cruz (No. 1,012, Marlins).

Oklahoma State’s Randy McCurry was picked No. 690 overall by the Diamondbacks. … Norman North had a pair of alums taken. Seminole State’s Caleb Simpson went No. 642 to the Giants and Matt Southard, who played at Yavapai College in Arizona, was picked No. 841 overall by the Phillies. … Seminole also had Jorge Perez (887, Astros) and Ty Williams (1,046, Mets) selected. … Carl Albert alum Matt Meadors, who played at Cowley County, was taken No. 631 by the Phillies. … NEO’s Travis Remillard was picked by the Padres with the 388th pick. SHORT HOPS

PAPILLION, Neb. — Rain washed out the RedHawks’ game Saturday night against the Omaha Storm Chasers at Werner Park.

Omaha led 1-0 in the bottom of the first before the game was halted. Runners were at second and third with two outs and Chad Tracy was at the plate when the umpires pulled the teams off the field.

The game was officially suspended and it will be made up sometime during Oklahoma City’s next trip to Omaha on July 22-25.

The two teams still meet Sunday at 2:05 p.m.
