Bundy to have elbow surgery

- FROM WIRE REPORTS

Dylan Bundy’s frustrating season ended before it started. The Orioles pitching prospect, who is from Owasso, will have elbow ligament-replacement surgery on Thursday. The procedure will end a frustrating season in which the right-hander never threw in a game.

“Hopefully, next year this time we’ll be putting a date on when he’s going to be pitching again in a game,” Baltimore manager Buck Showalter said Wednesday.

Selected fourth overall in the 2011 amateur draft, Bundy made it to the big leagues with Baltimore last season and was expected to contribute again this year. But he developed forearm soreness during spring training. The 20-yearold received treatment in April. When he resumed throwing, Bundy felt pain in his elbow and again was shut down.

After being examined by team orthopedist Dr. John Wilckens and Dr. James Andrews, it was determined that Bundy needed Tommy John surgery.

BRADLEY NAMED TO FUTURES GAME

Right-handed pitcher Archie Bradley, a former Broken Arrow standout, has been named to the U.S. Roster for the All-Star Futures Game, set for Sunday, July 14 in New York.

Bradley, taken by the Diamondbacks with the seventh overall pick in the 2011 draft, struck out 43 in 28 2/3 innings for Class A Visalia (Calif.) before being promoted to Double-A Mobile (Ala.). He is 5-3 with a 2.29 ERA in 10 starts for the BayBears. He is Arizona’s No. 2 prospect, according to MLB.com.

ASTROS MOVE SPRINGER UP TO REDHAWKS

Houston has promoted its No. 3 prospect, outfielder George Springer, to the Oklahoma City RedHawks. His first game with OKC will be Thursday night at Nashville.

Springer was the MVP of the Texas League All-Star Game on Tuesday night. He went 2 for 3 with two home runs and three RBIs after leading the South All-Stars to a 6-0 victory. He hit.297 with 19 home runs and 55 RBIs for the Double-A Corpus Christi Hooks.

Springer and Class A outfielder Delino DeShields will represent the Astros organization in the Futures Game in New York.

TEIXEIRA TO HAVE SEASON-ENDING WRIST SURGERY

Yankees first baseman Mark Teixeira will have seasonending surgery on his right wrist.

The Yankees said that the All-Star had an MRI with dye contrast and that team physician Dr. Christopher Ahmad determined the torn tendon sheath had not adequately healed. Recovery time for the surgery is projected at six months.

Teixeira was hurt while hitting off a tee March 5, when he was with the U.S. team at the World Baseball Classic. He made his season debut May 31, then came out of a game June 15 because of inflammation. He went back on the disabled list and did not respond to a cortisone shot.

He was batting just .151 with three homers and 12 RBIs in 53 at-bats.

CASHMAN REGRETS A-ROD COMMENTS

Brian Cashman says he regrets the words he used in an angry response to Alex Rodriguez’s injury update on Twitter, but the New York Yankees general manager insists the team wants a healthy A-Rod back at third base as soon as possible. Cashman said owner Hal Steinbrenner told him he spoke with Rodriguez and reiterated that injury information should be announced by the team, not individual players on social media.

Just before the first pitch of New York’s game Wednesday night against Texas, Yankees spokesman Jason Zillo told reporters that Rodriguez called Cashman around 5:30 p.m., and spoke with the GM and team president Randy Levine. Zillo says they spoke for nearly 30 minutes and everyone “fully understands the protocol and processes in place.”
