Edmond recycling program to get rolling on Monday

EDMOND — The last of the new 28,200 new recycle carts were delivered Friday in time for the start of Edmond’s expanded recycling program.

The 18-gallon bins are history, and 96-gallon rolling carts with lids will be used starting Monday to gather recycled items as part of the city’s curbside recycling program.

Cardboard and plastic shopping bags have been added to the items that will be recycled, said Wesley Dedmon, the city’s solid waste customer coordinator.

The new bins will be serviced every other week on the same day as regular trash service. Maps and information have been provided to residents so they will know their pickup days.

Customers can keep their 18-gallon bins or recycle them by placing them in the new recycling cart.

Every home in Edmond is getting a rolling recycle cart. The charge will in- crease from $2.32 a month to $2.80.

City council members agreed to spend an estimated $870,000 a year to contract with Republic Servicing for the new recycling program.

The new program will cost the city $150,000 more than the current annual contract with Waste Management, which has had the recycling contract since August 2005.

City mend:

Leave at least four feet between the recycling cart and the trash cart because different trucks are used in the collection of the carts.

Bring the recycling cart in as soon as possible after your collection to prevent vandalism and theft of the carts.

Place all recycling materials in the cart. There is no need to separate the materials.

Place the recycling cart at the curb or roadway before 7 a.m. on the desig- nated collection day.

The time of day varies for recycling collections. The collectors will work until dark to complete their routes if needed.
