WHAT’S GREENEST?

-

Regarding “Wind energy company pleads guilty to eagle deaths at farms” (Associated Press, Nov. 23): The Obama administration fined Duke Energy Corp. $1 million for the deaths of 14 eagles at one of its wind farms under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act. I assume that Duke strategically placed those wind generators in Wyoming for the purpose of killing migratory birds. If only they had made generators for the sole purpose of powering electric cars, such as the one Tesla Motors produces, perhaps they would have been forgiven rather than fined! Unfortunately, Duke’s electricity, like many other products in this country, is manufactured for the sole purpose of making a profit.

There are several ways to generate electricity, such as wind, nuclear, coal and natural gas. Regardless of which method you prefer, when the federal government fines the companies that make it, who do you think ultimately pays those fines? I buy electricity. I’m naive enough to believe that Duke will simply absorb these fines rather than pass the cost on.

If the “green” car buyers had a choice, which of the electricity technologies would they prefer to plug into at night, coal or natural gas plants, nuclear plants or an eagle-killing windmill?

SOLDIER FOR ALL TIMES

Regarding Michael Gerson’s “C.S. Lewis: rescuing desire” (Commentary, Nov. 23): For the last few days I’ve been searching for any mention of the anniversary of Lewis’ death. I’m thankful for Gerson’s acknowledgment of this great man. My life has been changed forever by his words. Lewis’ books support a spirit of doing what’s right. Lewis, no doubt, has helped thousands with the path created for their lives without the use of modern media. A soldier for all times and a race well run!
