Car crash strengthens bond between Mayfield and his mother
NORMAN — Baker Mayfield was in Norman in late April, preparing for final exams and the quarterback competition he’d ultimately win.
Halfway across the country, Mayfield’s mother was preparing for what was supposed to be a weekend getaway in Hilton Head, S.C. Gina Mayfield flew into Greenville to meet her sister and two friends for a 250-mile drive to the shores of the Atlantic Ocean. They never made it. A car accident that killed three left Gina and her sister seriously injured, so serious that James Mayfield could barely tell his sons.
“She’s hurt, but they’re still assessing things,” James told them.
