Norman North’s Young continues to shine
Norman North’s Trae Young became the first player at the Class 6A level to join the 60-point club in a win at Yukon last Friday.
NORMAN — A short list grew one name longer last Friday night when Norman North junior Trae Young scored 60 points in a win at Yukon.
It was just the 15th time in state history that a player scored at least 60 in a game, according to Chris Wilfong, who produces the Oklahoma High School Sports Almanac.
“I didn’t know until the end of the game that I had scored that much,” said Young, a 6-foot-1 point guard who has offers from nearly every major college in the country. “I guess some of the guys on the bench knew, but I didn’t find out ‘til after the game.”
The Oklahoman’s Boys Basketball Player of the Week, Young is the first player at the Class 6A level to join the 60-point club, hitting 12 of 15 3-point attempts to do it.
Young scored 50 in a game earlier this season, and reached the 50 mark a couple other times in AAU games, but Friday marks his career high at any level.

While the list of 60-point games remains short, it has grown significantly since 2000, adding names like Kelenna Azubuike of Victory Christian, Rotnei Clarke of Verdigris, Keiton Page of Pawnee and Stevie Clark of Douglass.
Though the playoff seeding has already been set, there will be a lot of pride on the line Tuesday night when Norman North visits Mustang. Norman North won the meeting last month behind 48 from Young.
“It’s a big game,” Young said. “We’re gonna go play hard and have fun, like we always do.”
