Chess tourney winners announced

EDMOND — The University of Central Oklahoma Friends and Family Chess Open attracted 149 players from 49 schools and homeschool associatio­ns.

The Feb. 6 tournament included a separate event aimed at chess-playing parents or other family members and friends of scholastic players, according to Rebecca Rutledge, executive director of the Youth Chess League of Central Oklahoma.

The tournament had an unrated section for casual players and a rated section for more serious adult chess players.

The event was a fundraiser for the chess team at Edmond’s Cleveland Elementary School.

Ida Freeman Elementary (Edmond) won the team awards in section 1 and section 2.

Carl Albert High School (Midwest City) won the team awards in section III and section IV.

Individual section winners were as follows:

Daniel Ruston (Edmond, Ida Freeman Elementary) won section 1 (kindergart­en through 4th grade rated under 500)

Luke Rehmel (Enid, homeschool) won section 2 (kindergart­en through 6th rated under 700).

Sergio Mares (Stillwater High School) won section 3 (6th through 12th rated under 700)

Gregory Lew (Midwest City, Carl Albert) won section 4 (all grades, rated under 900).

Xavier Williams (Carl Albert) won section 5 (all grades, rated under 1100).

Loucas Miller (Oklahoma City, Classen SAS) won the premier division, for players rated above 1100.

The next Oklahoma Scholastic Chess Series tournament will be the State Championsh­ips on Feb. 27 in Del City.

Players need not be affiliated with a school or team to participat­e.
